More than 85% of adults with DD are unemployed. Thus, for most their only source of income is SSI or approximately $674 per month. The current average rental in Broward County for a one bedroom apartment is $900/month making it difficult for those individuals who wish to live independently to be able to fulfill this dream.
In order to ameliorate this problem in 2007 LIFE established the Roger H. Matos Memorial Housing Fund. This fund provides rental subsidies in order to make it possible for those adults with developmental disabilities who want to live independently to achieve this dream. Over the years LIFE has also heard from many families that they have a need for respite services. Thus, we have expanded the Memorial Housing Fund to include the availability of respite services at our adopted group home – Whispering Oaks – on an as needed and as available basis. |
